Over 100 representatives from local schools and businesses gathered at the Holiday Inn Portsmouth for the Education Business Partnership's first annual awards ceremony.

Businesses ranging from large companies Kier Southern, Norjon Engineers and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to local enteprises Gosport Ferry, Townn Book Keeping and PCC Dog Kennels were all winners of awards that recognised their support and contribution in helping prepare young people for their futures in the world of work.

"Working with companies such as these has enabled us to provide 18,000 opportunities and 4,000 work placements to students throughout the region" said Cath Longhurst, Chief Executive of EBP. "We are proud that we have such phenomenal support from businesses in our work with all secondary schools in Portsmouth&South East Hampshire."

The black tie event marks the end of an incredible 12 months for EBP. Dawn Baxendale, Chair of the EBP's Board said "We said in September 2008, it would be hard to top the the previous successful year, but with an Award for Education Business Excellence, a National Mentoring and Befriending Quality Award and being recognised by the CEI, University of Warwick for our National Standards for Work Experience we have proven that Portsmouth's EBP is the best in the country."

In the last 12 months the EBP has also moved into prestigious new offices in 1000 Lakeside North Harbour, launched a new 'Business Ambassador Scheme' and attracted visits and praise from a variety of high profile individuals, including local MP Sarah McCarthy Fry and Communities Minister John Denham.

"The only problem with awards is that you have winners," said Cath "We hope that everyone who works with us in whatever company or capacity knows how much we appreciate them. Whether it is coming to talk to young people about jobs in our Working Lunches, visiting a school for Enterprise Days or offering Work Experience, we value every opportunity and contribution."
