Primary school children from across Portsmouth gathered at one of Gunwharf Quays’ favourite restaurants ‘Fire & Stone’ to design, create and enjoy eating pizzas of their own invention.

Arranged by Portsmouth EBP, as part of the Gunwharf Quay’s Food Festival, children were given the opportunity to leave school for the morning and learn more about what goes into one of their favourite meals by becoming pizza chefs for the morning at ‘Fire & Stone’.

One group of Year 5 and 6 pupils from St John’s Cathedral Catholic Primary School in Portsmouth was brought to take part in the pizza workshop by Year 5 Teacher Alex Mercer. ‘This has been a great opportunity for our children to not only be creative, but also learn about food, cooking and healthy eating,’ he explained.

‘Of course we teach using examples and excercises our pupils can relate to, but to see the kitchens, choose ingrediants and listen to chefs really brings their learning to life in an environment that is free from the constraints of the classroom. There were some really delicious pizzas made by the group.’

‘Throughout the year, Fire & Stone has been working with us to invite schools to see professional kitchens, meet the staff and learn about the restaurant industry,’ explained Claie Jolliffe, Project Co-ordinator for EBP. ‘This event was totally oversubscribed and enjoyed by over 60 pupils throughout the morning. We are very grateful to all the staff at Fire & Stone for their continued support and effort.’
