Business Partnerships’ Secure Successful Launch of Celebrity Chef Challenge

The launch of the 6th Celebrity Chef Challenge was held on Wednesday 8 February at Jamie’s Italian Restaurant, Gunwharf.  The young auidence were treated to a feast of Italian anti-pasti provided by the restaurant as well as a very personal presentation from Gennaro Contaldo,  the Naked Chef’s mentor.  Gennaro spoke of his passion for simple rustic food and how he came to work in the world of professional cooking.

The theme of this year’s challenge is ‘Food fit for an Olympian’;  with the forthcoming London Olympics in the summer it was thought relevant for the teams to focus on the importance of nutrition and a healthy balanced diet necessary for atheletes to maintain their stamina.  The teams were informed and spoken to by Katy Sexton the World Champion swimmer.  Katy, like Gennaro had volunteered their time to attend the launch and speak to the teams.  They presented from a ‘Chefs’ perspective covering elements of the culinary skills and passion for food to a ‘Professional Athelete’ highlighting the importance of  eating regular healthy, high  in carbohydrates ingredients.

Part of the presentations were provided by Lesley Powell, Public Relations Amabassador for Sainsbury’s in Farlington.  Lesley reinforced the message about how Sainsbury’s can support it’s local community by encouraging the education of a healthy and active lifestyle.  Sainsbury’s are sponsoring the ingredients for the final which takes place at the Gunwharf Food Festival on Friday 29 June at 10.20 a.m.  John Sackett, Events Manager for Gunwharf Quays who has been involved with the challenge since it started 6 years ago wished the teams the best of luck and looks forward to welcoming them to the Food Festival.

The two heats will take place at Highbury College, Portsmouth Campus in their state of the art kitchens on Tuesday 12 June and Thursday 14 June from 3.15 p.m.  Martin Tarbuck, Catering and Hospitality Manager for the college who is the lead judge and is another member of the team who has been involved from the beginning was on hand at the launch to answer any questions from the students.
